Bob Seger will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at a ceremony tonight in New York. When it comes to songwriting, Seger tells us, "I've always tried to write something that had some germ of universality. You know, I've felt that way, I've been there, I've known that person, whatever. And that's what I strive to do."

Dave Grohl was scheduled to present and perform in honor of Seger, but had to cancel. Replacing him is Valerie Simpson who will do "Night Moves." Seger, a 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, will do "Turn the Page."

Joining Seger in the Hall of Fame will be Gordon Lightfoot, who's best known for the '70s classics "Sundown" and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." He will be inducted by Steve Miller, who will perform "Sundown." Miller was nominated for induction this year but failed to make it.

Stevie Nicks will induct Bette Midler and sing "The Rose," and Meat Loaf will be on hand to induct his songwriter, Jim Steinman.

Previous inductees include John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison and Glenn Frey, who says Seger was a mentor to him growing up in Michigan.
