Oklahoma's unemployment rate stays steady

By Staff

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. —

Oklahoma’s unemployment rate stayed steady last month.  John Carpenter with the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission says it stayed at 5.6% in August.

Carpenter says we saw a gain in employment of 1,800 and a rise in unemployment of 950.  He says the rise in the number of unemployed may reflect people that had given up looking for work that are now out seeking a job.

Oklahoma is well ahead of the nation in its unemployment rate.  The state rate of 5.6% last month is much lower than the 9.1% national rate.

Oklahoma’s unemployment rate last August was 1.4 percentage points higher than the rate for this August.
