TULSA, Okla. —
It's still firefighting, just not directly.
Tulsa firefighters canvassed the area around 4900 N. Elwood Tuesday afternoon, knocking on dozens of doors, handing out flyers and asking neighbors for help in solving the arson fire that happened New Year's Eve and nearly killed firefighter James O'Neal.
"Y'know we're a pretty close-knit group, and we're just like a family, you can pick on each other all day long, but when somebody from the outside tries to do harm to your family, y'know everybody comes together," said Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Stan May.
Ollie Burgess lives not far from the house that was burned and she doesn't undertand why anyone would try to hurt the family that lives there.
"They're quiet, they don't mess with anybody, so I don't understand why anybody would have did that to them," Burgess said.
She said she didn't see anything, but she said it scares her that an arson happened so close to her house.
She points out there's a back road behind the house that burned, so if the fire was set from behind the house, it would have been difficult for anyone to spot them.
Firefighters planned to visit more than 200 houses in the neighborhood on Tuesday.
The reward for information leading to an arrest of the arsonist is up to $5,600.
